The short story “There Will Come Soft Rains” by Ray Bradbury really stuck with me after reading it. It was published in 1950 and set in 2026. Reading it now only 5 years away from 2026 it puts in perspective what people thought the 2000s were going to be like.

The story is about a house that stands alone. The house is basically like the smart house from the Disney channel original movie Smart House. It tells us the daily routine of the house and all the technical aspects of the house. As the day goes on we realize that no one is living there and some kind of nuclear blast took everything around the it and the people who lived there. A thunderstorm strikes the house and it burns and takes all of the technology with it.

We are in that time period where we are creating things that will last far beyond our own life time. This science fiction short story is not to far off that theory. It is weird to think that after we die the our technology with still be around and alive. Even after an apocalypse or a nuclear blast it will still be running. There are so many movies and TV shows where robots take over the world or get out of control and need to be shut down. We are getting to that point where robots that have been made are extremely possible to get stronger. It is ironic in the story that the robots survived a nuclear blast or something that involves radioactive waves but they didn’t survive a fire.

What stuck with me is the idea that no matter what happens to us the technology and robots will last twice as long then we will.
